A case of Fuel Contamination

Our chemical testing laboratory receives samples from all over Ireland and some of these samples are fuels. Water contamination in diesel fuel is bad news. Very bad news as not only will water contaminated cause steel tanks and piping to rust, it will encourage the growth of microbes within the diesel piping system which will damage anything using the diesel fuel.

We were recently contacted by a transport company who had suspected that due to damage to a filling point on the diesel tank, water had contaminated one of the three twenty thousand litre diesel tanks.

Our forensic engineer visited the site, examined the tank and took three samples of diesel were taken back to our laboratory where they were tested in accordance with ISO 12937:2000 Petroleum products — Determination of water — Coulometric Karl Fischer titration method.

Whereas the diesel, when tested in accordance with BS EN 590:2022, Automotive fuels. – Diesel - Requirements and test methods, should have an upper limit of 200 mg/kg, the three samples were found to have a water content of 375 mg/kg, 410 mg/kg and 411 mg/kg.

The client requested a rapid turnaround on the diesel analysis and we accomplished this work in under a day.
