Metal Failure

Failure Investigation

Metal Failure

Metals are used throughout all aspects of our lives, from the houses and beds we sleep on, to the devices and vehicles connecting the world, or even just the knives and forks we use to eat our dinner.

Metals are complex and diverse, and failure can come in many forms. Determining the root cause of a failure can be quite complex, as many interactions throughout the life of a failed component must be considered. Did your metal component rust then crack, or crack then rust? It can be very hard to tell! A detailed and forensic technical examination of the component and its’ life cycle is often required to reach a strong conclusion.

The failure of metals occurs typically due to one or more of the following:

  • Incorrect manufacturing procedures
  • Incorrect processing
  • Incorrect materials
  • Inadequate design
  • Incorrect use

Attributing failure to any of these causes requires not only an expert knowledge of the characteristics of metals, but also specialist equipment to analyse and examine components. Here at BBB Technologies, we have both! Here’s an example of how we can help you:

What are the issues we solve?

The investigation of in-service failure of metallic components or equipment, using a suite of hi-tech test equipment to determine the root cause and associated factors resulting in the failure.

For example:

With metals playing such a large role in our lives, many people will face an obstacle caused by a metallic failure. Metals are complex and diverse, and failure can come in many forms. How we found a solution for our client

The Problem: An employee in a local tech company was adjusting their office chair, when the adjustment handle broke suddenly, causing the employee to fall and injure themselves. The cause of the fall was disputed, and the company contacted BBB Technologies to investigate.

The Process: The broken handle was sent to the BBB Technologies lab for analysis. Using our high-speed precision cutter, we cut through the handle to examine the fracture surface using our suite of high-end microscopes.

The Result: Our analysis showed a mixture of fatigue wear and shear fracturing, indicating the handle to the reclining mechanism, was being used improperly when it broke. Due to improper use of the chair reclining mechanism, and the age of the chair, all the chairs were replaced with an alternative style.
